Free Modified Dave Elman Hypnosis Induction

Dave Elman (1900-1967) helped to promote the medical use of hypnosis in the 1960s. Elman’s definition of hypnosis is still in use today among some professional hypnotherapists. Although Elman had no medical training, he trained many physicians and psychotherapists in the US in the use of hypnotism.

He is also known for introducing rapid hypnosis inductions to the field of hypnotism. One method of hypnosis induction which he introduced more than fifty years ago, is still one of the favored inductions used by many of today’s practitioners.

Dave Elman was known for his authoritative style of hypnosis.  A good pre-talk is essential for this style of hypnosis.

Here’s the modified Dave Elman induction…

Eye Closure

Take a nice deep breath.  Fill your lungs completely and hold it for a second or two…
As you let the air fall out, close your eyes and relax.  Now, relax your eyes and all the muscles around your eyes, fully and completely.  Relax them so completely, that as long as you maintain that relaxation, your eyes will simply remain closed.  When you have them so relaxed that they will not open give them a good try and satisfy yourself that they remain closed.

(Pause and watch client trying to open eyes)

Good.  Now stop trying and relax your eyes again.

Body Relaxation

Now take that same quality of relaxation, and allow it to spread from the top of your head all the way down to the tips of your toes in a warm comforting wave of relaxation. 

(Pause and watch for relaxation spreading through body) Good. 


In a moment, I’m going to ask you to open your eyes and close them again.  When you close them, just go 10 times deeper into relaxation.  Open your eyes, now close them.  (Pause) Go 10 times deeper into comfortable relaxation.  (Pause) 

In a moment, I’m going to ask you to open your eyes and close them again.  This time, simply double your relaxation.  Open your eyes, now close them.  Double that relaxation.  (Pause)

Good.  In a moment I’m going to ask you to open your eyes and close them again.  This time, simply go much deeper than before.  Open your eyes, now close them. Much deeper.  All the way down. Good.  (Pause)

Arm Drop Deepening

In just a moment, I’m going to pick up your left hand and arm. Since you are deeply relaxed, your arm will be loose and limp like a wet dish rag.  Don’t help me, let me do all the work.  I’m going to lift your arm up just a few inches and then let it drop down. When I let it drop, just allow it to make a nice satisfying plop, and go much deeper (do arm drop). Much deeper. In fact, each time I pick up your arm and allow it to plop down, go much deeper into relaxation (repeat arm drop several times). 

Suggested Amnesia

Good. Now we’ve got a good level of physical relaxation. Now you can add mental relaxation to it. In a moment, I’m going to ask you to begin saying the letters of the alphabet backwards out loud.  As you say each letter allow your mind to become more relaxed, calmer and more peaceful.  You’ll find, that within just a few letters, your mind can grow so relaxed and peaceful that the rest of the letters just fade away completely. You will feel very satisfied when all the letters have disappeared.  It feels so good to be able to relax completely in a very peaceful state.

In a moment you can start saying the letters of the alphabet backwards out loud, allowing each letter to relax your mind even more so that you can become very peaceful very quickly.  Within just a few letters, the rest of them will just disappear.

 Begin saying the alphabet backwards now.




Becoming more peaceful and more relaxed.


Now simply allow them to disappear completely.

Are they all gone now?
